Out of State Nurse Practitioner Programs

For Out-of-State Nurse Practitioner Programs: Prior Board approval is required for programs seeking to offer clinical placements to students enrolled with a current CA RN license.

To obtain Board approval, verification of the program’s compliance with California Code of Regulations CCR § 1486, "Standards for Nurse Practitioners" is required.

The forms below may be used to demonstrate compliance with CCR § 1486 and begin the approval process.

1. Verification of Non-California Based Nurse Practitioner Education Program, General Information and Instructions (Instructional only)
2. Verification of Clinical Practice Experience form
3. NP Program Preceptor form*

You may also choose to submit your own documentation demonstrating compliance with CCR § 1486 in lieu of using the provided forms.

Form #2 (Verification of Clinical Practice Experience), or alternate documentation, must be completed in full and submitted to brn.onlinenp@dca.ca.gov.

Once the completed form is received, reviewed, and determined to demonstrate compliance with CCR § 1486, the program’s request for approval will follow the routine process of Board consideration. A Board Action Letter will be sent to your school with the Board’s decision within 30 business days of the Board Meeting at which your materials were presented.

*Once the Out-of State Nurse Practitioner Program enrollee with a current CA RN license has an identified preceptor that is located in California, the program will complete and maintain:

• Form #3 (NP Program Preceptor) - school will retain this document for each assigned preceptor to demonstrate compliance with CCR § 1486;
• The policies and procedures for the preceptorship are clear and in alignment with CCR § 1486;
• Orientation is provided to the preceptors by the program and evaluated by faculty at least every two years.

All required records outlined above and identified in CCR § 1486 are maintained by the program and produced for review upon request by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
